Sowelu: Be Like the Sun…

landscape-982178__180

Nourishing the Self is so important for manifesting our highest potentials in any endeavor. Through eating nourishing foods, or through prayer/meditation/ contemplation, or a walk in Nature, we store positive energy for the new day like a solar panel collects the rays of the Sun to energize Life. (Betterendings 7/26/16)

On this July 31st we are at the cusp, a meaningful cycle shift, from the Archetypal energies of the Nourisher (July) archetype into that of the Golden Child (August).  To me an apt symbol of this powerful shift is found in the Nordic rune of Sowelu (see the rune below that looks like a lightning bolt, third line down on the left.)

stock-vector-alphabet-with-ancient-old-norse-runes-futhark-set-of-scandinavian-and-germanic-letters-on-293573042

Sowelu (various spellings) has always been a special rune to me. It is a symbol of WHOLENESS and represents the energy of the SUN, which always gives and is of service to the Whole, “without asking anything in return.”

When once my beloved harlequin calico cat Ariel fell from a balcony and punctured her lung on a grill underneath the balcony window (!), at an emergency clinic I placed a Sowelu rune stone with Ariel in her special oxygen chamber to give her strength. She survived and lived til twenty!

wallpaper-1494070__180

I wear the Sowelu as a talisman on a necklace in times when I choose to exert extra strong focus on a goal. This past ten days or so I have been wearing Sowelu as my book proposal for Your Life Path is now in the hands of publishers.

Here below is one of many versions of a descriptive summary of the Sowelu rune (http://www.drnikki.com/readings-chat-and-email/modalities/rune-stones/rune-stones-sowelu/) :

The rune of Wholeness Sowelu

Sowelu is the final of the runes of the Elder Futhark. After travelings through the entire set of Runes we come to Sowelu – Wholeness. Sowelu is the wholeness to which we all belong and are connected. Sowelu is finding wholeness and completeness within whom we are and how we interact with others. Sowelu is the Sun in it’s most magnificent and beneficent guises. Sowelu is the harvest from the fields stored and ready to carry through the dark of winter’s night. Sowelu is achievement. Sowelu is celebration. Sowelu means having what we need when we need it – even if we can’t see the truth of that in the current moment.

Sowelu’s wholeness can also be the wholeness found in a happy and appropriate relationship. Sowelu indicates that your personal regenerative powers will allow for you to continue to grow even after you have achieved wholeness. It is once you have achieved wholeness for the self that you can truly participate as an equal partner in a romantic relationship. For, as it is often said, we must learn to love ourselves before we can turn the internal light of self-love out to the world. Loving ourselves allows us to choose those relationships that are healthy and nurturing for us and our partner.

Sowelu speaks of basking in the glory of the sun’s rays. The spiritual warrior has achieved his center. His final arrow has been released and he now knows the inner workings of his own character. Through this position of wholeness a new, stronger, more solid, and higher foundation is created.

So, fellow bloggers and readers, shine on! Be like the SUN that always rises anew; You too can illumine the darker spaces and fill your Day with Light.

Eat, Laugh, and Create Better Endings!

The Nurturer (or, Nourisher) archetype in us likes to bring about Better Endings; or, perhaps more accurately, the Nurturer initiates Better (New) Beginnings. It is an initiating or ‘originating’ energy in our Psyche.

animal-927904__340

Think about it. Meal time engages us in daily ritual with our Nourisher archetype Ally. (I write this after partaking of an excellent, light breakfast at one of my favorite restaurant retreats.) Why is it so important, as nutritionists tell us, to start the day with a “good breakfast”? Because in this manner we nurture as well as nourish ourselves as we set out upon the journey of our day’s travail. Nourishing the Self is so important for manifesting our highest potentials in any endeavor. Through eating nourishing foods, or through prayer/meditation/ contemplation, or a walk in Nature, we store positive energy for the new day like a solar panel collects the rays of the Sun to energize Life.

buddha-828819__340

I am aware as I write of nourishment and the Nurturer archetype that there are many in the world right now whose internal Nurturer energies are in Shadow. Hunger and starvation, including those afflicted with eating disorders such as Anarexia Nervosa, inhibit the self-nurturing we all need in order to survive and to thrive at our highest potentials. (This is different from fasting, however, which can be a means of drawing upon spiritual nourishment.) Hunger is a calling out not only for food but for love and nurturing. Maslow reminded of how without the most basic nourishment of sufficient food, it is exceedingly difficult for anyone to achieve self-actualizing modes of achievement or creativity.

So, let us nourish and nurture one another.  And I invoke you to nourish and nurture your Self in every way possible, allowing this to flow outwards to support and uplift others in your family, your social network, and the world at large. If we might think of our Selves as microcosms of the greater Macrocosmic life systems in which we are born, live, and serve, then we know that to start with self-nurturing is a means by which the world itself can become a more nourishing place for all.

Nature Nurtures!

While continuing to explore the value of the NOURISHER or Nurturer archetype in our lives this month, I am reminded that Nature is Herself a Nurturer! We are each embraced and supported by ‘Mother Nature’ constantly, from the air we breathe to the Sun’s gentle nourishment, to the water which makes up around 57-60% of our bodily substances.  We are immersed in and composed of the biochemical elements that compose the very world we live in; our bodies are vehicles created of these same elements for Soul to get about here, to grow and to thrive interactively with others composed of these same substances, nurtured by these same natural forces that convey and express our spiritual essence in this world.

I am grateful to have my buddy/dog Sophie to take for walks all around the region we live in and wherever we travel. All of the parks in my home town I have named “Sophie Parks.”  We especially enjoy exploring woodsy parks or trails. My heart lifts and breath expands and steadies even on these relatively short jaunts with Sophie. Nature is cleansing, healing, settling, balancing. And so, we can seek Nurture through Nature.

Sophie

How do YOU integrate Nature as a Nourisher in your life?  How often do you allow yourself to do so with your current routines?  One thing any of us can do at any time is to step away from the troubles of the day or the situations in the family or world that may bear down on you. Take yourself and maybe bring someone you love to the Park, the Woods, the Open Space, the Trail into the Mountains, or row your kayak on the Lake, or walk the Oceanside, or camp. My sister Lee, a pastor for the United Church of Christ in Connecticut, walks along the Ocean near her home every day and posts daily photos on Facebook:

Nature resonates with your own inner nature and allows your Inner NOURISHER to breathe and to calm you and to direct your attention to that which is permanent rather than transitory.

Nourishing One Another

stock-photo-hand-gives-a-wild-flower-with-love-romance-feelings-333702980

Why are we here in this life but to learn better how to give and receive love? I write this from the perspective of the Nourisher archetype within my Self.  From this perspective love is all that matters in the end, and in the beginning, for the Life Force itself can be experienced AS unconditional Love, a harmonizing, unifying principle according to which health and growth proceed. When I watch the divisive political speeches being promulgated, I feel I can only send love and graceful neutrality but I do not want to be affected by the hatred being displayed.

stock-photo-barbecue-utensils-on-white-background-389694853

You have all probably heard the following parable about the difference between ‘Heaven’ and ‘Hell’.  As Harold Klemp, spiritual leader of Eckankar tells it (with me paraphrasing from memory of a talk and article of his called “The Giant Utensils of Heaven and Hell” (1990 ECK Springtime Seminar, San Francisco, California), imagine a group of recently deceased Souls sitting around a table laden with a cornucopia of foods. The only utensils are some very long forks, so long that one person alone could not reach his or her own mouth with food at the end of one of these utensils. How can these Souls know if they are in a Heaven or a Hell? They are in the Negative place if they try to feed themselves and cannot eat. But if they are in the positive realm of a Loving afterlife world, they will feed one another from across the Table.

stock-photo-team-teamwork-togetherness-collaboration-concept-343048862

Isn’t that a telling story for the world today? How can we feed one another from across any Divide, not being content to selfishly serve ourselves or those who agree with us in opposing others?  After all, we are all in this together…that is, in this world that can be a heaven or a hell of itself depending on how we live in it.

And BTW, as a university professor I have to say, telling truth to one another and acknowledging others’ positive values, honoring their words: this is nourishing behavior. Lying or stealing from another, even their words as with plagiarism, perpetuates selfishness and demeans the whole. So let’s give credit where credit is due, but be discerning.  Let us honor one another and celebrate nurturing behavior.

Call for A Change of Heart!

heart-1450302__340

Well folks I did it again, making the same mistake I made last year in assigning the GOLDEN CHILD, a Leo Archetype (yes) to July, when actually it is the prototypical archetype for the August Leo persona. I guess that’s how strong the charismatic GOLDEN CHILD’s voice (in me, with alot of Leo in my astrological chart) can be!  I will return to the Golden Child posts in August.

JULY holds the primary archetypal energy of the Cancerian NOURISHER. And how apt this feels to me today after the horrendous (again), senseless attack on human life and decency in Nice, France. I feel that as a blogger, I have an obligation to take note of such enormous ripples in the fabric of what could be called righteous or civil behavior. If we begin to ignore such atrocities, if we begin to blur our feelings of outrage and sorrow about them, then we risk becoming numbed and ‘desensitized’ to the evil–if anything can be called that, this is it!–so rampant across the world today.

france-1138760__340

THE NOURISHER (or, Nurturer) in me calls out for a CHANGE OF HEART! It makes no sense to me that those labelled ‘terrorists’ or ‘Jihadists’ perhaps in their own terminology would conduct such a murderous campaign against innocent peoples–and yes, they ARE that!–simply going about their business or celebrating their liberty and being alive. Are these perpetrators so conditioned by ancient ideas of ‘a life for a life,’ for instance, that they have forgotten to celebrate their OWN lives and to be thankful for the diversity and community available today? I feel that what is needed in the world, especially in those tormented, however wrongly in their own understanding, by feelings of religious suppression or their desire to be righteous against the grain of normal human values and decency, is A CHANGE OF HEART.

heart-1213475__340

Let’s call out for A CHANGE OF HEART from misery and feelings of disempowerment or a desire to control to an appreciation of all that Divinity has BLESSED us with in this brave world, here and now.  An Attitude of Gratitude and Forgiveness can go a long way towards effecting a Change of Heart, whether in the individual or in the world at large.

Love, not Power, guys.  Life, not Death, is what ultimately matters for the sake of learning and loving and going forward to greater awareness even of our own divinity or inviolable existence. Bon Vivant a Tout!

Advice from your Golden Child

background-1474637__340

A major advantage and goal of getting to know your archetypal ‘parts of Self’ is that you can call upon various of your archetypal sub-selves to draw upon their specific perspectives and strengths of character. After all, these archetypal energies are facets of your Self.  Your Golden Child is that charismatic part of yourself that is always willing to step forward to help you express yourself boldly when the situation calls for that. But Golden Child is one of those archetypal personae that many of us—not Leos, for instance—tend to suppress or bury.

bear-673665__340

Can you think of a current situation in your life that could benefit from your stepping forth to make bold proclamations? Well then, even if you may not be ready to let your Golden Child shine forth fully on your life stage, I invite you to a technique that can help you allow your Golden Child to give you (or others) the advice It is ready to proclaim.

This is an active imagination technique such as Carl Jung and James Hillman have used to encounter  archetypal personae in their own unconscious domains.

board-939244__340

Set some alone time to spend a half an hour or so in a quiet space where you will not be interrupted. With eyes closed or open (your choice), imagine! Let yourself sink into a part of yourself where your Golden Child lives. Ask him or her about a situation in your life where you could use strong advice. Have a conversation or just listen/attend to what this bold facet of yourself wants to say to you about the situation. You could also imagine someone else there with you, someone you wish you could be bold enough to say something to that you really wish you could say.

buddha-828819__340

images are from pixabay.com

When you complete your active imagination session, I encourage you to journal about it. Either write out the dialogue as you remember it or at least record the bold statements that your Golden Child proclaimed as messages from your unconscious. By the way, what is she or he like, that part of you that gets to say everything you’d like to be able to express? How might you allow that part of yourself to have more of a voice in your life? Maybe in that situation you were contemplating? Write ONE STATEMENT that boldly proclaims what you need to say. You can print this out and write your statement below if you wish to:

Finding Forrester: A Golden Child Better Ending Story

tribalism-1201697__340

This week after the horrific string of homicides in Baton Rouge, St. Paul, and Dallas, in thinking of the Golden Child archetype I find myself recalling the story of Finding Forrester. In itself this story depicts a ‘better ending’ scenario when the reclusive author William Forrester (Sean Connery) intervenes on behalf of his young protegee, the brilliant, inner city genius Jamal Wallace (Rob Brown) when he is accused of plagiary out of crass and ignorant racial bias. Surely a Black basketball player brought across town to bring a pennant to the prep school could not outshine his preppy White schoolmates at the scholastic tradition of writing. Yet, he does.

people-913778__340

Were  Jamal, represented as 17-18 at the time of the story that appeared in the year 2000, alive today he would be in his mid-thirties. I wonder, what might this talented author have to say to us, this week? Having lived through callous bigotry and appreciating the cultural camaraderie of his inner city family and friends–knowing deeply that Black lives do indeed matter!–, I do not believe he would be silent, today. Having befriended one man whose own race was not a deterrent to his becoming a mentor who also was open enough to learn equally from his younger mentee, Jamal would not be hasty, I believe, to resort to racial hatred himself.

martin-luther-king-25271__340

images from pixabay.com

I believe Jamal might exhort his reader to separate egregious error from the human condition itself. He might call upon our common potential for doing Good and attend not to the terror or carnage so much as to our coming together across all divides for all of us to contemplate and mourn this senseless violence.

Enough, he might title his message today. I only hope Jamal Wallace would not retreat to becoming a recluse himself. We need his awareness. We need to be revealed and healed. We need each of us, each of you, to look deeply within and then embrace one another, with hearts and arms open, with careful words that bridge the chasm of indifference.

You Are a Golden Child!

dalai-lama-1207695__340

Leo is the astrological sign of the Golden Child persona archetype according to Dr. Charles Bebeau, the archetypal psychologist who founded the former Avalon Archetype Institute. For the month of August I will focus on exploring the Golden Child archetype with you. I invite you to participate by practicing some of the self discovery tools I will be sharing here.

girl-1424685__340

The Golden Child is associated with positive traits of being charismatic, generous, and outgoing, with a flair for trailblazing and talented performance. Shadow traits could include a  potential for being overbearing, controlling, vain or or self absorbed. Everyone has a bit of the Golden Child in our unconscious makeup; it is a dominant character mode for some and might show up in a more inhibited or in a situational manner for others.

stock-photo-masked-197334059

When does your Golden Child persona express itself (or would if you’d but let it)?  When are you most in your “on stage” best? Do you feel yourself ‘slipping into’ a more extroversive role when you feel most called upon to do so, or is this a more typical, normal public persona for you? Many other archetypal personas can benefit from aligning or combining with this ‘mask’. As a professor for instance I have a dominant Teacher archetype mode, and before a large class of students sometimes my Golden Child shows up to buttress my Teacher role. Then I find myself able to be more humorous and outgoing than is characteristic of my core, rather introspective nature. It’s almost as if I step aside in a large group environment to give ground to this talented sub-Self of the Golden Child persona. I am so grateful it is there!
